Tables--border line settings

Sometimes I need to create a table with no top border (or bottom border) so that the top boundary of the table is invisible. I do this when I need to stack tables to create, for example, an upper table with 3 columns and a lower, related table with just two and I want to center the lower table under the upper one and create the appearance that they are all one big table. Although I have managed to do this in the past it is always very tricky. There should be an option in create tables so we can select the appearance of each table box boundary independently. Once the table boundaries are locked in, it is virtually impossible to get what I want.
